This exhibition highlights the work of two significant Darebin artists, Ken Senior and Sid Cross, and examines the techniques and influences that contrast and connect their distinctive art practice. The notion of landscape dominates and is explored through polar opposites, from Senior’s meticulous documentation and superb watercolour skills, to Cross’ interest in representing landscape through formal abstraction.
Senior’s work evokes the precision and preoccupation with the everyday, a flatness of form and colour drawn from artists such as Jeffery Smart, the industrial landscapes of Precisionist painter Charles Sheeler, and the photorealism style of Richard Estes. Contrasting these ideas, Cross’ works are inspired by schools of modernist abstraction, drawing from artists such as Ralph Balson, Kazimir Malevich, and Piet Mondrian. The artworks selected for this exhibition pinpoint specific moments in time, capturing different aspects of our culture and society - from the literal to the emotive.
