'From Darkness to Light': Retrospective of works by Alice Blanch Chehovski
Alice Chehovski has spent most of her 70 years trying to migrate from darkness to light. She left Australia in 1923 on a short family holiday to Russia when she was 2 years old. The Stalin government would not let her family return. In 1981, after 58 years of battling the Russian bureaucracy to regain Australian residency, she was allowed to return to Australia. Chehovski commented that she arrived in Australia with '113 of my pictures in a suitcase, a dictionary, $105 and the dress I was wearing.' The exhibition surveys Chehovski’s works from the past 40 years.
